Notes

First WC with the new FIFA World Cup Trophy (Brazil kept the Jules Rimet permanently in 1970). Unique 1974-1982 format: 4 groups of 4 → top 2 advance to one of two second-round groups (4 teams each) → group winners contest final, runners-up play for 3rd. The Netherlands debuted 'Total Football' under Rinus Michels with Johan Cruyff at the centre. East Germany beat West Germany 1-0 in the only ever Cold War WC meeting (Sparwasser, 22 June). West Germany won the final 2-1 (Breitner pen, Müller). 97 goals, no own goals credited.
